Right sizing is the concept of working with what you have to make better use of existing space. Therefore you increase enjoyment of items important to you.
Step by step right sizing
1. Start with the easy stuff. Eliminate anything broken, damaged or no longer wanted. Go to the out-of-the-way spaces like garages and attics. Once these spaces conquered, it will be easier to tackle the harder to decide items.
2. Would you replace something if it went missing? If your answer is “no”, then it’s probably not worth keeping.
3. Don’t be a storage unit for others. If you have items that belong to family or friends, ask them to pick them up. Set a deadline and stick to it. Anything left – donate.
4. Ask for help. Do what you can on your own, but ask a family member(s), friend or even a professional organizer for help.
5. Decide what is really important. Pretend you are moving overseas and shipping will cost a small fortune. What would you take with you?
6. Does it suit my needs? Do you have drawers full of plastic containers and you only cook for 1 or 2? Most may no longer necessary.
7. Schedule regular times to work on right sizing. Right sizing is a life-changing marathon, not a sprint. Because you didn’t accumulate everything overnight, sorting through everything will take time as well.
8. Value what you keep. Display the most valuable items in your personal space, rather than tucking them away where you can’t enjoy them.
9. Prevent new collections from forming. Ask for gifts of experiences like dinner out, theatre or anything that is a treat for you, instead of things. In addition, these can shared with special people in your life.
10. Use age to your advantage. Do you have items that you would like family members to “eventually” have? Now is the time to make that happen. Keep photos of your “gifts” with their recipients.
